Teaching Creativity: The Inspiration Learning Center Approach

At Inspiration Learning Center, we take pride in our “East meets West” educational philosophy, seamlessly integrating the best of both traditions. The Western approach emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, and skill performance—not just understanding theory but also applying it to real-world projects. This methodology prepares our students to study and work anywhere in Canada, the USA, Europe, and beyond. But how exactly do we teach creativity? Can creativity even be taught? The answer lies in fostering an environment that encourages curiosity, exploration, and self-expression.

Moving Beyond Multiple-Choice: Teaching Students How to Think

Creativity is not something that can be learned through multiple-choice questions. While standardized tests have their place, true creativity thrives in an environment where students are encouraged to think independently. At Inspiration Learning Center, we use open-ended questions to teach students not what to think, but how to think. These types of questions challenge students to explore possibilities, justify their reasoning, and develop their problem-solving skills.

For instance, rather than asking a student to recall historical facts, we might ask them to write a first-person narrative as a historical figure, immersing themselves in the character’s thoughts and experiences. This method not only enhances their understanding of history but also sharpens their analytical and creative writing skills.

Storytelling and Narrative Thinking

One of the most effective ways to nurture creativity is through storytelling. Encouraging students to answer questions in narrative form helps them develop their imagination, communication skills, and ability to structure ideas cohesively. By incorporating characterization and plot, students learn to connect facts with emotions, making their learning more memorable and impactful.

For example, in an English class, rather than simply analyzing a novel, we may ask students to write an alternative ending, create a spin-off story, or even craft a screenplay inspired by the book’s themes. This approach not only fosters creative expression but also deepens their engagement with the material.

Exposure to Cultural Events: Expanding Horizons

Creativity flourishes when students are exposed to diverse experiences. That is why we encourage our students to attend cultural events, engage with different artistic forms, and reflect on their experiences through writing. In our well-celebrated summer and March Break camps, students visit museums, attend theatrical performances, and participate in hands-on workshops. These immersive experiences provide them with fresh perspectives, which they then articulate through reflective essays, discussions, and creative projects.

Integrating Technology and Visual Presentations

In the digital age, creativity is often expressed through multimedia. We encourage students to develop visual presentations where they integrate their own pictures, ideas, and technological skills to convey their messages effectively. Whether it is through digital storytelling, video production, or graphic design, these activities help students hone their creative abilities while also developing technical proficiency.

For example, instead of writing a traditional book report, students might create a short documentary summarizing the book’s themes using video clips, animations, and voiceovers. This interactive approach makes learning more dynamic and engaging.

Encouraging Students to Step Outside Their Comfort Zone

Creativity requires courage. It is about taking risks, making mistakes, and learning from them. At Inspiration Learning Center, we challenge our students to step outside their comfort zones by encouraging them to tackle new challenges, explore different perspectives, and experiment with unconventional ideas. Whether it is through public speaking, debating, or improvisational theatre, we create an environment where students feel safe to express themselves without fear of judgment.

For over 23 years, we have been guiding students toward academic success and personal growth.
